Panasonic launches flagship Lumix FX500, new touch screen ultracompact

Having hit consumers with a barrage of new compact digicams just last month at PMA, Panasonic is back at it again today with the announcement of the ultracompact, 10.1 megapixel Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500. As a new flagship model for the FX line, the newest Lumix comes with a wide-angle Leica zoom lens, 1280x720 video recording capability, optical image stabilization, and - most notably - a 3-inch touch screen LCD. Team New Zealand out of the Americas Cup?

Team New Zealand out of the Americas Cup?

Briefly; Team New Zealand have effectively been ruled out of competing in the next Americas Cup. A New York Judge has ruled that, Alinghi, the Americas Cup holders must race Oracle BMW Racing for the Americas Cup in 2008.

The match will be held in July.

Team New Zealand has also filed two lawsuits against Alinghi, one of which is compensation for delays.

{edit} The Americas Cup will be sailed in 2008, not 2009.

Finally some sense in politics

I haven't had a political rant for a while but I must say that I am impressed with Roger Douglas. Yes, this would be the same Roger Douglas who gave us 'Rogernomics'. The slash and burn financial policies of the post Muldoon era of the early 1980's. Regardless of what you think of that time and the methods used the fact remains that Roger did drag us kicking and screaming into the brave new world of globalisation.

Now he is at again on the far right of the ACT Party and I can't help but agree with (some) of what he is proposing:

- Cut the top tax rate to 33c in the dollar
- Adjust tax thresholds
- First $20K of income tax free
- Get rid of 'welfare for families'

With all the farting around and bickering between Labour and National it refreshing to see a party laying all the policy cards on the table rather than dealing them up one at a time.

It almost suspiciously seems that Roger has been reading my blog. Perhaps the Jama Party should join forces with ACT.

Olympus E-420 First Thoughts

Olympus E-420 First Thoughts
When the Olympus E-420 was announced a few weeks back, there was lots of talk from the company about how compact and light their latest entry-level 10.0 megapixel DSLR was. With lots of smallest/lightest/fastest claims bandied about out there, we were appropriately skeptical. As it turns out, though, they weren't kidding.

Sony Alpha A300 and Alpha A350 - compared to rivals

Sony Alpha A300 and Alpha A350 - compared to rivals
The introduction of Sony's brand new Alpha A300 and Alpha A350 have doubled the company's current DSLR range - and at kit prices of $799 and $899 USD respectively, stack-up favourably against the competition. Both new Sonys feature Live View with quick AF, tilting screens for greater compositional flexibility, and like all Alphas sport built-in sensor-shift stabilisation. They're likely to be big sellers, so if you're in the market for a new DSLR, you'll want to carefully compare their features against the competition - and we've done just that for you in our Sony A300 and A350 feature comparison, where you'll discover where they fit-in with models like Canon's EOS 450D / Rebel XSi and the Nikon D60, along with Sony's existing Alpha A200 and A700.
